Benefits of Yellow Dock

The part of yellow dock, rumex crispus or curly dock that is used as an herbal remedy is the yellowish brown root of the plant. The roots are high in vitamin C, iron compounds and they also contain calcium, vitamin A and some other minerals.

The most recognized benefit of rumex crispus root extract is its blood cleansing and purifying properties. It is used as a remedy to remove toxins from the body. The active plant compounds stimulate the function of the biliary system and are able to assist digestion and drain waste products such as arsenic and lead from the liver.

The stimulation of the flow of bile in the liver helps improve liver and gallbladder functions. The extract is used as an herbal remedy for hepatitis, jaundice and also liver diseases.


Curly dock root extract is beneficial for people who are anemic or have other iron deficiency symptoms because of its high iron compounds.


The blood cleansing effect benefits the skin by eliminating impurities. One of its uses is in the treatment of acne, boils and psoriasis. Traditionally, the leaves of curled dock were crushed and used as a compress to treat these skin problems. It was also used to provide relief from cuts, insect bites and stings.


Curly dock may relieve constipation. This is because one of the chemical compounds found in curly dock root is anthraquinones which produces a mild laxative effect.


Because of the presence of vitamin C, it was used to treat scurvy which is caused by the deficiency of this vitamin.


The curled dock leaves are eaten as salad or taken as herbal tea. It contains iron, protein, potassium and vitamin A. But it isn't highly recommended to take internally because it contains oxalic acid which if taken in overdose can lead to undesirable side effects to the urinary tract and kidney. If you want to drink the tea, it's advisable to use the root instead.
