Benefits of Mullein Herb

Did you know that mullein herb is used as a home remedy to relieve ear ache? If you have a middle ear pain or otitis media, just drop 1 to 3 drops of mullein oil into your ears. Even if your ears are fine, you can use mullein oil to maintain your ear health.


An herbal ear tonic usually includes mullein and some other medicinal herbs such as St. John's wort, olive oil, garlic, lavender, pasque flower, echinacea, chamomile and tea tree oil.


Mullein extract is obtained from the flowers and leaves. There are many species of the mullein plant but the most common species that is used for herbal treatment is the verbascum thapsus or also known as the common mullein or great mullein. Mullein plant contains mucilage which provides a soothing effect and help in relieving pain and inflammation.

And because verbascum thapsus is a mucolytic and expectorant agent, mullein herb is also being used as a remedy to treat emphysema which among the most common symptoms is shortness of breath. People who smoke will benefit from taking mullein extract supplement or drinking mullein tea. The natural chemical compounds in mullein help expel phlegm and mucus from the lungs, bronchi and trachea. Mullein will also benefit people who suffer from whooping cough and asthma.


Another benefit of mullein oil is its effectiveness in treating skin problems such as eczema, warts, hives, cellulitis and boils when applied topically on the affected skin. This is because it has emollient and astringent properties. Since it has anti inflammatory properties, it also helps in hemorrhoid treatment. Mullein also contains anti viral prosperities. It may help fight influenza and herpes simplex virus.


So far there isn't any record of side effects of mullein. If you are allergic to plant extracts, it may cause irritation or hives.
