The most active constituent in lemon eucalyptus oil is citronellal while eucalyptus globulus oil contains cineol or eucalyptol. Oil of eucalyptus is categorized as medicinal oil while lemon eucalyptus essential oil is considered as aromatic oil.
As the name suggests, oil of lemon eucalyptus has a strong lemony scent. The eucalyptus lemon oil is extracted through steam distillation from the leaves of the lemon scented gum tree or eucalyptus citriodora. Essential oil manufactures use the leaves and twigs because the bark of the eucalyptus citriodora contains tannin which is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent.
Lemon eucalyptus oil is a natural fumigant and is used as a home remedy for insect repellent and is used as an additional ingredient in many commercial bug repellants.
Besides citronellal, the leaves of the lemon scented gum tree contains citronellol, flavonoids and sterols. And together with other constituents, oil of lemon eucalyptus acts as a natural antiseptic and produces antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic and calmative effects. Based on two studies, it was found that the oil of lemon eucalyptus has the most antimicrobial properties compared to the other eucalyptus species.
