As the name suggests, eyebright herb is used as a remedy to support healthy eyes. It has been used since the Middle Ages in Europe to treat every type of eye infections and eye inflammations such as cataracts, glaucoma and vision problems.
Its botanical name is euphrasia officinalis and the parts of the eyebright plant that are used are mainly the leaves and the stems. Eyebright has shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti viral and anti-allergenic qualities. Among its constituents are gallic acid, lignans, phytosterols, tannins and vitamin C.
A cohort or panel study was carried out by 12 experienced general practitioners and ophthalmologists in Germany and Switzerland to find out the efficacy and tolerability of eyebright eye drops on patients with inflammatory or catarrhal conjunctivitis. At the end of the cohort trial, the researchers concluded that a drop of the euphrasia officinalis herb used three times a day is safe and effective to treat various conjunctiva conditions.
If you suffer from pink eye or conjunctivitis, you can try using eyebright tea as an eye wash or a compress. What you need to do is put 2 eyebright tea bags in boiling water and steep them. Once the heat is comfortable enough put the bags on your eyelids.
If you use the fresh leaves, add 1 teaspoon of finely chopped eyebright leaves in hot water. Steep between 5 to 10 minutes and then strain the leaves. To use it as an eye bath, place the tea in an eye cup and wash your eyes. Another option is to soak a clean cloth in the herbal tea, rinse it and wash your eyes gently.
Taking eyebright extract supplement in the form of capsule or liquid extract is one of the ways to support healthy eye functions. The herbal extract helps strengthens the veins of the eyes. The additional benefits of taking it internally is because eyebright has shown to have the potential to stimulate the liver to remove toxins from the body. And even though there have not been any scientific evidence, eyebright has also been used as a remedy for allergies and to support the circulatory system.
