Clary sage oil is the extract from the flowering tops and leaves of the salvia sclarea plant through steam distillation. It produces a sweet aroma. The herb was used as an eye wash and as a remedy for treating eye inflammation and was known as clear eye herb.
Clary sage essential oil may help treat dandruff caused by the overproduction of sebum if it is used about 3 times a week. To use it for this purpose, blend 4 drops of clary sage essential oil, 8 drops of cedarwood oil, 6 drops of rosemary oil and 10 drops of tea tree oil with your neutral-based shampoo.
It also helps strengthen hair follicles which is helpful in preventing thinning hair. To use it mix 2 tablespoons of clary sage oil with 3 tablespoons of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of jasmine oil and 5 drops of ylang ylang oil.
On top of that clary sage helps increase volume of hair and restores dull hair. It works best when mixed with lemongrass oil.
Clary sage may help as a remedy in preventing and treating acne and oily skin. Dilute and blend it with grapeseed oil or jojoba oil and apply it on the zits. Both clary sage and grape seed aid in controlling excessive sebum and reducing inflammation. You can use it as a face wash with your cleanser. To use it as a moisturizer, add the oil with almond oil.
Clary sage essential oil produces antidepressant, euphoric, nervine and sedative effects. The aroma has the ability to calm the nerves and put you in a relaxed and inspired state of mind. It is widely used as a remedy for anxiety, asthma, depression, menopause, insomnia, PMS and stress.
For this purpose, diffuse the oil or use the steam or vapor therapy or take a warm bath with clary sage essential oil. A soak in diluted clary sage would also ease muscle or joint pains and menstrual cramps. It blends very well with frankincense oil, patchouli oil, sweet orange oil, thyme oil and ylang ylang oil.
Clary sage has emmenagogue properties and is not recommended for pregnant women because it will stimulate the pelvic area and uterus to stimulate blood flow.
Clary sage has the potential to induce labor by stimulating muscle contractions. When combined with chamomile oil, it helps relieve mental stress, fear and pain during labor.
Just like any other pure essential oils, if you use clary sage by itself, dilute it with carrier oil such as jojoba oil, grapeseed oil and almond oil before applying it on your skin.
