Benefits of Swedish Bitters

What is Swedish bitters? What are the benefits of Swedish bitters? In case you haven't heard Swedish bitters have a long history of healing, although only not many people know about them. Let's take a look at Swedish bitters history and also what they were used and are still used for.

Back around the 16th century, a powerful combination of 11 herbs was put together by one Dr. Phillipus Paracelcus. His original combination of herbs wasn't called Swedish bitters then. Sometime in the 18th century, a Swedish physician, Dr. Claus Samst, labeled the concoction as Swedish bitters. And it has certainly lived up to its reputation as the long life elixir, given that Dr. Samst himself used the tonic religiously and lived up to 104 years.

However, the one who really brought them to the forefront as a remedy for many illnesses was a European herbalist, Maria Treben. Treben had been suffering from the after effects of typhoid fever and despaired that she would ever be well again until she discovered Swedish bitters. She received it from a woman who heard that she was ill and after just one application, Treben was completely cured. And she never suffered from the aftereffects of typhoid fever again.

After that, she discovered Samst's manuscript of Swedish bitters and its healing effect on about 46 medical conditions. The original recipe consisted of aloe, myrrh, saffron, senna leaves, camphor, rhubarb roots, manna, theriac venizian, carline thistle roots, angelica roots and zedoary roots. She went on to create her own formula based on the original manuscript and marketed them.

In the manuscript, it was stated that Swedish bitters when taken about two weeks before delivery can ease childbirth. And if you are nursing, you can use Swedish bitters to help alleviate the inflammation of the nipple that can happen during nursing.

Many people have also claimed that Swedish bitters may help expectant mothers overcome morning sickness as long as the elixir used is in a nonalcoholic base. But please make sure you check with your healthcare professional including a naturopath or midwife before you take it if you are pregnant.

Swedish bitter tinctures are available in alcoholic or nonalcoholic bases, and you consume them by putting one to three teaspoonfuls in herbal tea or water. You can usually drink half of the mixture you've created half an hour before and then half an hour after a meal to alleviate digestive difficulties, including morning sickness. It can also be topically applied to the skin, such as around the nipple, to alleviate inflammation and soreness.
