What is physical education? What are the objectives and benefits of physical education? Why is PE important?
No, no, it's not that! And no, Kama Sutra is not required reading in physical education. Get your mind out of the gutter. Although the benefits of Physical Education can help in that department too.
Anyway, physical education or P.E. is where pupils are trained in a range of activities such as dance, games, gymnastics, swimming, athletics and other outdoor activities; in order to develop their confidence and skills in these activities.
P.E. classes also promote physical fitness in students, help them understand rules and strategies and coach them to work as a team.
"I never skip physical education. The best part is watching the cheerleaders in short skirts bend down. That really helps elevate my heart rate." - 16 year-old schoolboy
One of the main objectives of physical education is to bring in the element of joy to break the monotony of school.
All work and no play make you a geek. Being a geek means you'll get bullied a lot. Worse, you won't get to pull girls.
Physical Education is one way to reduce the geek DNA in students. Besides, P.E. refreshes the students' minds. It offers a break from boring classes and makes you more alert for the next one.
The other objective of P.E. is to encourage students to be more physically active and to value a healthy lifestyle that they can adapt for life.
Physical Education gives the budding national heroes a platform to exhibit their talents. Those with a flair for sports get an opportunity to display their talent and get discovered at an early age. Teachers can then weed out the natural athletes and give them the proper platform to turn them into a professional sportsman or sportswoman.
Physical Education also develops interpersonal skills in children from a very young age. Sports train them to be team players, develop sportsmanship ethics and enhance healthy competitive spirit.
It is also a good way to learn discipline which would benefit them for the rest of their life.
Naturally, Physical Education teaches us the value of physical fitness and how to become physically fit. P.E. classes are the best way to learn the healthy way to become physically active. This not only maximises performance and enjoyment, but more importantly, reduce the rate of injury.
Another benefit of Physical Education classes is they offer a natural outlet for aggression. P.E. classes can be the platform for healthy ways of releasing excess energy, emotion, tension or frustration.
