Dehydroepiandrosterone is more commonly referred to as DHEA. DHEA is a hormone steroid that is naturally produced by the adrenal gland, adipose tissue and brain. But it mostly produced by the adrenal gland. The body then uses DHEA to create the male and female hormones or estrogen and testosterone. But its production declines as a person reaches around age 25.

DHEA is also often referred to as the anti-aging or fountain of youth hormone because of the possible link between youth and aging. It is believed that DHEA supports anti-aging.


There have been researches carried out to ascertain the other benefits of DHEA. Some of the findings are that it promotes muscle gain and weight loss, increases the metabolism level within the body, helps to deal with mood level and supports a positive mental attitude. And DHEA may also lead to an increased level of sex drive.


DHEA has also a range of other different functions that includes the ability to reverse the resistance to insulin, increases stamina and strength, decreases the amount of fat in the body, improves the immune levels and therefore increases overall well-being and it also helps to improve sleep.


The symptoms that are associated with a low level of DHEA include exhaustion, fatigue, lowered immunity, memory problems, a decreased level of sex drive, depression, and decreased ability to handle stress and also a lowered level of vitality. Lower levels of DHEA are often found in old people and those with diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease.


DHEA can be purchased as one of the many over the counter supplements and the normal dosage recommended on the labels is to take one 50mg capsule daily. Although there are a number of DHEA benefits, there may be some side effects that might affect the hormone levels and also heart palpitation. It is best that you consult with your doctor for the right dosage and whether it is right for you before taking any DHEA supplements.
