Benefits of Colloidal Silver

What is colloidal silver? What are the health benefits of colloidal silver?

Colloidal silver can be defined as microscopic silver particles which remain suspended without forming a dissolved or ionic solution. Colloidal silver has been touted as an alternative medicine that has been marketed since the 1990s to treat or prevent numerous diseases.

It should be noted that medical authorities advise against colloidal silver use as a cure for diseases, because their effectiveness has not been scientifically proven. It is legally available only as dietary supplements taken orally to support healthy functioning. Colloidal silver benefits rest on the claims of individual users and sellers.

The commercial preparations called colloidal silver include products containing concentrations of silver colloids, ionic silver compounds, ionic silver or silver proteins in water. Electrolysis is used to produce concentrations of colloidal silver of 30 ppm or less. For 50 ppm or higher concentrations, silver compounds like silver chloride or silver iodide are bound with a protein so as to disperse the particles in a solution.

Colloidal silver was used as antibiotic until 1938, when the sulfa-drugs and penicillin were developed, which were fast acting and less expensive. Moreover, there were concerns about it adverse effects, and modern antibiotics have been considered safe and effective.

Benefits of colloidal silver

People who have used colloidal silver reported that one of the benefits of colloidal silver is that it boosts their immune system. What colloidal silver does is it wipes out deadly bacteria, viruses, fungus and parasites. It is also claimed that colloidal silver is lethal to as many as 650 illness-causing micro-organisms.

Another colloidal silver benefit is that it leaves beneficial bacteria and enzymes intact. The selective action of colloidal silver is based on the thickness of the wall membranes. Pathogens have thin walls, while native human cells have thick walls. Reaction of silver ions with electrons of cells readily ruptures the thin walls of pathogens. This action is unlike those of pharmaceutical antibiotics which cause havoc to beneficial bacteria and pathogens alike.

Single-celled pathogens have been known to mutate and become resistant to certain antibiotics. But this cannot happen with colloidal silver use, so avoiding the development of resistant strains is another benefit of colloidal silver.

There are claims that colloidal silver heals acne without scarring. These people took colloidal silver orally and spray it on the affected areas. This is an amazing development, since an estimated 17 million Americans, notably in the 12 to 24 year-old bracket, are potential recipients of this benefit of colloidal silver.

Colloidal silver dosage

According to EPA and some doctors' recommendation, an average adult may consume daily seven teaspoons of 10 ppm colloidal silver without risk. But as a preventive measure, you may want to take one teaspoon of 5 ppm colloidal silver or 75 micrograms as a daily supplement.

To treat acute conditions, a therapeutic dose of one ounce taken three to four times a day, is generally practiced. Once the symptoms subside, usually after three weeks to four months, users may stop colloidal silver use.
