Benefits of a Positive Attitude

What are the benefits of a positive attitude? Why do self-help gurus keep saying that attitude is everything and that you have to change your attitude if you want to succeed in life?

Let's first define attitude.

Attitude is a stance, an outlook or a way of thinking. When a person has a positive attitude, it means she generally has an optimistic view about herself, life, living and the people she comes in contact with. On the other hand, a person who has a negative attitude likes to complain and gripe at almost everything and about everyone.

So, what are benefits of a positive attitude?

Everyone experiences good and unfavorable situations in life. One of the benefits of a positive attitude is developing positive expectancy. With the right attitude, a person is able to respond well to stressful situations, delays and difficult people. Instead of focusing on the setback and being in denial, she acknowledges it, look for and find the positive and move on. She believes that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Let's just take an example. You are unemployed, broke and in a mess. Will thinking positive change your condition?

If you keep focusing on negative thoughts and feeling sorry for yourself, you are moving in the wrong direction. Thinking positive will change the way you feel. When you feel better, you can think rationally and make wise decisions. You will feel motivated to take the necessary actions. And your experience and situation will change.

It's helpful to remind yourself that life conforms to your dominant thoughts. Instead of talking to yourself and telling others about your problems, change the way you think, talk and believe. Look at possibilities because what you search you will find.

Here is another one of the benefits of a positive attitude. It affects how other people behave and react towards you. When you don't judge people, when you allow others to be who they are and when you assume that everyone has positive intentions, you have developed the right mindset. People will respond to you accordingly because it shows in your manner or conduct. You become a better friend, parent, daughter or son and employee or employer.

Can you change from having a negative or bad attitude to becoming positive and have the right thinking?

The answer is, Yes; that is if you really want to change and can see the benefits of a positive attitude. It requires a firm decision and a commitment.

Your attitudes about life and people were developed, among others, through influence and upbringing. One of the most effective ways to effect change is making a mental shift. Change the way you think and your beliefs and convictions. Now that you are a grown up, nobody can force you to believe or accept things. You can choose your own thoughts and decide what's best for you.

Another important thing to do is choose positive minded people to hang around with. Influence is subtle but powerful.
