Aromatherapy Benefits

People take advantage of aromatherapy benefits for many different reasons. Whether they are looking to relieve stress, pain or depression, the benefits of aromatherapy are almost endless.

History of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy dates back thousands of years. It was actually discovered by the ancient Chinese culture whose practice involved burning over 300 different herbs to cure various ailments. Incense improved both psychological and physical health for them.

Not only did the Chinese culture utilize aromatherapy benefits to heal their people, but so did the Egyptians. The Egyptians used different forms of essential oils and incense for different purposes.

How Does Aromatherapy Work?

Aromatherapy is not hard to practice and can create a sense of physical, emotional, spiritual and mental well being. The essential oils are extracted from plants through their leaves, flowers, seeds, bark and stems. Essential oils can be used externally and internally, through the nose, to promote different healing properties.

You can actually change your behavior or mood with certain oils. For instance, inhaling the scent of sandalwood would instantly go to work to relax the body. Lavender helps lull you to sleep. There are nerve endings in your nose that pick up the essential oil's scent molecules and deliver them straight to the brain which is why these oils work so well. The brain then sends out the appropriate commands.

Benefits of Aromatherapy

As mentioned, there are many aromatherapy benefits that improve the health and vitality of a person. For instance, just as Vicks vapor rub, when inhaled, helps to relieve cold symptoms, eucalyptus essential oil does the same when inhaled. If a person is experiencing stress, a dab of basil oil on the wrists will help.

Tea tree oil can be rubbed on a patch of ringworm to get rid of it. Other benefits of aromatherapy are tackling insomnia, healing wounds, sexual dysfunction, postpartum discomfort, healing colds and pain management.

Essential oils in aromatherapy can also be used as cosmetic skin treatments as well as for healing cuts and wounds. This is because essential oils have antiseptic properties. You can rub certain oils into the scalp to stimulate hair follicles promoting growth and reducing hair loss.

Nowadays, you will find shampoos, conditioners, laundry detergents and even baby products that contain aromatherapy essential oils. Lavender and chamomile are most popular oils out on the market today with their soothing effects that lull babies to sleep.

Under the supervision of a doctor, aromatherapy benefits a person by helping with many minor to moderate problems instead of the traditional prescribed medications. It has been used for thousands of years to heal the mind, body and spirit.
